Road trip from Tehran to Kashan (around 240 km). In Kashan, visit:

  • Tabatabai House or Borujerdi House: Tabatabai House is a stunning mansion of an early 20th-century carpet trader. As the culmination of the traditional architectural style of Iranian houses, it showcases a harmonious mix of artistic taste and architectural beauty. What about Borujerdi House? The story goes back to when a young merchant fell in love with the daughter of Tabatabai, the same carpet trader who owned Tabatabai house. To bless the marriage, Tabatabai asked his future son-in-law for a house as impressive as his own.

In Nain, find:

  • Amir Chakhmaq Square: a 15th-century complex built by order of a woman in honor of her late husband, the governor of Yazd. The beautiful façade creates a nice background for local gatherings here on specific occasions.
  • Jameh Mosque of Yazd (UNESCO): A true masterpiece, this mosque makes you marvel at its lavish tilework, soaring minarets, and elegant arches. Built over an earlier fire temple, Jameh Mosque still holds remnants of its history in its ambiance and design.
  • Yazd Water Museum: Yazd is a desert oasis and this museum is an exploration of the interesting system ancient Iranians invented for water management. It exhibits qanats, water clocks, and traditional water storage and irrigation methods.
  • Old City of Yazd (UNESCO): Step into the past and wander through the maze-like alleys of the Old City of Yazd, also known as Fahadan Neighborhood. Adobe walls, decorated doorways, lovely arches, and wind catchers rising above traditional structures make your walk through the winding alleys unforgettable.
  • Fire Temple of Yazd: safeguarding a sacred flame that has been burning for over 1,500 years, this temple is today one of the main centers of Iranian Zoroastrians.   • Saryazd Castle: listen to the echoes of the past inhabitants who started living here sometime between the 5th to 7th centuries. Walk along impressive walls and intriguing passages, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Pahlavanpor Garden (UNESCO): a cleverly designed oasis that beautifully blends desert nature and architecture. With its cool pavilions, elegant pools, lush greenery, and ancient trees, this Persian Garden is a perfect spot for refreshment.
  • Zeinoddin Caravanserai (UNESCO): nestled between Yazd and Kerman, this caravanserai takes you back to the 16th century, when it was built as a resting place along the Silk Road.
  • Meymand (UNESCO): Around 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, people saw the caves here as a nice winter residence. From that time, they have been adapting the caves to make them feel more like houses. This fairy tale village is now a UNESCO heritage of special landscapes, traditional practices, and cultural traditions of the nomadic tribes that inhabit the region.

Leave Meymand for a historical fortress:

  • Rayen Citadel: set against unforgettable desert scenery, this well-preserved fortress captures your eyes with its impressive adobe walls and intricate brickwork. Explore the ancient rooms and towers, as well as the strategic design.

Then, in the small town of Mahan, you’ll visit:

  • Shazdeh Garden (UNESCO): lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and meticulously designed waterways in the backdrop of a desert! This 19th-century place is a great example of the brilliant system ancient Iranians invented to create gardens in a land that lacked enough water: Persian Gardens!
  • Shah Nematullah Vali Shrine: this graceful spiritual site is dedicated to a revered 15th-century Sufi mystic and seer. The shrine features precious mosaics and serene gardens that invite you to contemplation and cultural exploration.

Next stop:

  • Shahdad Desert (part of UNESCO-listed Lut Desert): imagine a dramatic scenery of towering clay formations against an endless background of sand. These otherworldly formations are called Kaluts. As the sun sets, the desert transforms into a stargazer’s dream! Enjoy it!

Lut desert offers a variety of possible routes, attractions, and activities that you can experience based on the way you like to explore it: on foot, by 4WD, or by camel.
